ABOUT
What is this project about?
"Black Roses" is an upcoming unofficial charity zine project celebrating the relationship of Blake Belladonna and Ruby Rose (Ladybug). We focus on their relationship both seen and unseen. The project's theme will be based on them and their relationship in canon and in various alternate universes. Our intention is to celebrate their relationship and characters, and bring joy and happiness to fans of the ship and characters.
What is A "Zine"?
A zine (or fanzine) is a self-published collection of creative works revolving around a subject and/or theme. Basically a fan-made anthology/magazine.
Where will the proceeds go?
The "Black Roses" project is for charity. After the costs of production and shipping, any profit made will be going to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. The SRLP works to "guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence." How will contributors be compensated?
Contributors will recieve a free physical and digital copy of the zine, all merch, and all stretch goals! We want to make sure they're fully thanked for their time and hard work!
Will you be providing proof of donation?
Yes! We will be posting a screenshot of the donation verification to Tumblr AND Twitter.
GUIDELINES
The overall theme of the "Black Roses" zine is Blake and Ruby's relationship, as seen in a romantic light.
We would like to thank our potential artists, writers, and cosplayers in advance for their interest in the zine and adhering to the rules laid out here and on the guidelines page of our Tumblr. Please read through these pages thoroughly so you can find what you need for your future application!
We encourage questions! If you find anything confusing, do not hesitate to send us an ask on Tumblr or email us!
Also, before we begin, we would like to emphasize that this zine is PG-13! It is age-appropriate and Safe For Work. We WILL NOT accept ideas that have to do with abuse, nudity, sex, gore, horror, extreme angst, bigoted or otherwise offensive content, etc. If you have to ask if it would be appropriate, it most likely isn't.
All acceptance emails will be sent out by April 7, 2021. You will have until April 14, 2021 to secure your spot. Be sure to check your spam folder so you don't wind up losing your spot!
APPLICATION EXPECTATIONS
ARTISTS & MERCH ARTISTS
Submit 2-4 finished portfolio pieces for review, they don’t have to be RWBY related. Just pieces that give us a feel for your art style. We will be looking for the following:
• Fully coloured, completed, and SFW. No sketches or incomplete works.
•Traditional drawings are allowed, but they must be HIGH QUALITY scans.
•Link to full portfolio. This can be a Google Drive, website, DeviantArt, Tumblr tag, etc.
•Good understanding of anatomy, colours, composition, lighting/shading, and creativity/originality.
•At least one piece with a background.
WRITERS
Submit 1-2 finished works. These don't have to be Ladybug OR RWBY related, but they should be your best work.
• Word count should be between 500-1000 words.
• Samples CAN be part of longer works (piece of a chapter, a chapter of a whole story, etc) but should have a clear beginning and end.
• Proper grammar and punctuation.
• No spelling errors.
• Good understanding of plot and flow.
• Creativity/originality.
• Understandability. (Is it hard to grasp? Are there plot holes?)
• Link to your full portfolio (Tumblr tag, Archive Of Our Own, website, Google Drive, etc).
IF RWBY RELATED:
• Character portrayal should be close or in line with what the show portrays.
COSPLAYERS
Cosplay submissions can be new or old content.
Submit 3 photos. These should represent both your own skill & your photographer's skills.
• Professionally edited photos. No selfies!
• Photos should be Blake, Ruby, or both!
• Link to your full portfolio (Google Drive, DeviantArt, Facebook, website, etc).
• Good understanding of portrayal, composition, and editing.
• NO NSFW shots.

Hey! I'm CJ, I'm 20 and American. Besides being the head organizer, I'm also going to be handling the finances, the graphics, the shipping, and the social media (that will be shared among the mods). Ladybug is my favourite ship and was my first ship in the RWBY fandom when I started watching in 2015! I want to share my love for Ladybug with everyone! This will be my second zine project, and my first one as a mod and organizer. I'm super hyped to work with everyone!
